Where’s Mel going? Autumn 2018

15 countries in six weeks…

After an extremely wet and grisly summer in Reykjavik, it’s time to go adventuring again. This time it’ll be a fairly low key affair – I’m off on a whirlwind city-hopping tour of Europe. In the last 12 months, I’ve had more than enough helicopter rescues, weird diseases and time on crutches to last me a lifetime! So I’m hoping for a much smoother journey as I venture to places less exotic and closer to home.

But that’s not to say it won’t be interesting… I’m on a mission to seek out the more unusual aspects of these well-trodden cities and report back. I’ve been looking into forest bathing, snail farming, and cow trekking just to get me started. And then there’s all the strange and fascinating stories I’ve been digging up about places before I go. There’s so many amazing things I didn’t know, and so many delightful quirks that come with each culture.

For example, did you know that in Sweden it’s illegal to vote for Donald Duck? Or that in Finland they spray reindeer with a special glow in the dark paint to reduce car accidents? And it’s officially illegal to ‘pee in the sea’ in Portugal (I’m sure at least one person reading this might be feeling a bit shifty right now…).

Yup, there’s a lot of strange things out there to learn and share!

So, starting from 7th September I will spend six weeks travelling through the following places:

  1. Stockholm, Sweden
  2. Helsinki, Finland
  3. St Petersberg, Russia
  4. Tallinn, Estonia
  5. Riga, Latvia
  6. Copenhagen, Denmark
  7. Amsterdam, Netherlands
  8. Zurich, Switzerland
  9. Liechtenstein
  10. Southwold, UK
  11. Lisbon, Portugal
  12. Bologna, Italy
  13. Athens, Greece
  14. Santorini, Greece
  15. Poznan, Poland

I’ll be blogging and sharing Instagram / Facebook stories along the way so if there’s anything you’re particularly interested in, or would like to see me write about then drop me a line 🙂

    1. Ha! Actually those will be the two places i’m in for the shortest time. I’ve been to Copenhagen before so I already know I love it there (my love affair with interactive art began in Copenhagen when I took refuge in an art gallery while it was raining!). I know nothing about Poznan right now, except the cheapest flights between Iceland and Europe run from there. So I’m pretty sure I’ll end up there again if I don’t manage to see enough this time around. Very happy to hear your friend recommends it 🙂
